September 30

Today in Mr. Schick's human geo class we went over our world fact book answers. My group got all of the questions right. After we were done going over all of the questions and answers we started to watch a video about the country Sudan in Africa and their civil war that they were having with the Northerners of the country which were the Muslims and the Southerners of the country which were Christians. In the movie there are a couple of main characters  the first one introduced was named Panther Bior. He tells his story and what he experienced with the war. There was other characters that told the film makers about what they went through and they also told about a group of boys that traveled a very far distance to other countries to go to the U.N. refugee camps in Kakuma, Kenya which has a population of 86,000 Sudanese. That's what we did in Human Geography.

Today in Mr. Schick's human geo class we spent most of the class looking at the CIA fact book.  The CIA fact book is an online webpage that is run by the CIA. One of the features that the website is a drop down box that gives you all kinds of information about countries around the world. Stuff like population, how many people have power, birth rate, death rate, etc. We spent some time looking at different countries we looked at the united states and we saw that our numbers were really good. Then we spent a very long time looking at Somalia and we saw that they were very low on the charts had a lot of population and a high death rate because of the way they live and they also don't even have any TV stations because it is such a bad place to live. That's what we did in Mr. Schick's human geo class.

Today in Mr. Schick's Human geo class we went over a lot of numbers and facts about the world.  Some of those numbers and facts are listed below:

life expectancy                                immigration-entering a country or nation
crude birth rate
developing nations                           emigration-leaving a country or nation
developed nations
rate of natural increase
net migration rate                             life expectancy_ average number of years you are  immigration                                      expected to live by a group of people that were born in the
emigration                                         same year as you were
push forces
pull forces
total fertility rates

We learned that there are 7 billion people in the world and that is increasing by 77 million people a year
90% of population growth is in developing countries
CBR-number of births per 1,000 people
CDR-number of deaths per 1,000 people
Push Forces- economy, the way they live, government, jobs, etc.
Pull Forces- lots of jobs, good living conditions, good government, etc.

September 18

Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geo class we talked more about globalization and sweatshops. We shared our slide shows that we made with Google slide show maker about globalization. Our group did not go first we went second. The first group that went, their slide show presentation was very good it was just like ours just a little different. Theirs included Pros and Cons about globalization. Some cons are people get treated poorly and paid little salary. And a pro is that you can make a lot of money selling all over the world and having poor workers that will work for low wages work for you. When we went ours had the same things except we had a page with just pictures and one of the pictures was a McDonald's picture. It had a guy that ruled some where  and he handed out these red books and made everyone have one and it was because he ruled, and in front of him was Ronald McDonald reading a little red book with the McDonald's logo on it. Then our slide show was basically over. That's what we did in human geo.

September 17

Today in Mr. Schick's human geo class we talked even more about globalization. But we mainly talked about Nike and their workers.  We talked about how some articles online say that Nike has changed its ways and is now paying its workers more but the article gave no information on how they changed or anything and some articles say that they still haven't changed at all.  The one that said they haven't changed that much said that Indonesia has Nike pay work $4 a day now instead of $1.25 but somehow Nike got the military of Indonesia to make all the people except $3.70 instead.  This is crazy because they can afford to pay dozens of athletes millions of dollars just to wear the brand but they cannot even pay work that spend long hard hours and hard labor to make the shoes decent pay to get them what they need to live.  That's what we did today in human geo.

September 16

Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geography class we watched a video.  The video was about Nike sweatshops.  Two Americans named Jim and Leslie traveled to Indonesia to go observe how Nike factory workers live.  They moved to Indonesia for a month where they lived in a 9'x9' room that had no air conditioning and was very hot. Also they were only paid $1 a day to work the whole day. Not $1 an hour one dollar a day.  And if they are sick and need medicine they have to cut out a couple of meals just to get one pill of headache or fever stuff.  Jim one of the main people in the film lost 45 pounds because of the lack of food.  The factory workers never really got to see their kids because of all the work they have to do.  When the film makers went to talk to the Nike CEO he was very rude and refused to talk to them about the workers in Indonesia. After the video we got back into our small groups and continued working on our globalization slide show.

September 13

Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geography class we learned how to make a slide show with Google documents.  We broke off into small groups of 4 and crated one.  It was just like the Google document, one person had to create the document then send an e-mail to the others in the group and they would all join in and work on the presentation. It is exactly the same as the document one except it is like a power point. Our slide show was on globalization and my partners for the project are Charlotte, Hanna, and Claire.  My slide was on anti-globalization movement, and they are against the spread of large corporations all over the world.  For example McDonald's, they have spread to almost every or all countries in the world, and have taken over the fast food industry, some people like the people in the anti-globalization movement are against the spread of McDonald's and want it to stay in the US or even in just a couple of states. That's what we did today in Human Geo.

September 11

Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geo class we talked more about globalization.  Even though I left early I did stay for most of the class and globalization was the main thing we were talking about. We talked about it today because we didn't finish talking about it yesterday because we always get off topic.  Mr. Schick gave us a new definition for globalization. Actually I wouldn't call it new I would call it tweaked. the definition is, globalization is the interconnection of different parts of the world.  He also explained to us what the silk road is.  China was really good at making silk. Only China knew how to make silk, and everyone wanted it.  So people would come from everywhere to get it.  This happened in all different countries because they would share their culture with the world.  Globalization also involves religion. Everywhere you go there are people practicing all different kinds of religions. That was our Human Geo class today.

August 10

Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geo class we learned about globalization.  McDonald's was the main thing we talked about. We talked about how when McDonald's started it was just in the United States, then started to spread all over the world.  And one of the examples that Mr. Schick used was that when McDonald's spread to Japan people that lived there became more unhealthy.  Japanese people used to be extremely healthy but since McDonald's and fast food came along their health has gotten poorer. Globalization is a growth to a global or a worldwide scale. We also talked about why a lady sued McDonald's and Mr. Schick told us the real story  and that is the people were giving her the food too fast and she set the coffee down and then it spilled on her and that she didn't want to sue them she just wanted them to pay for her medical bills and the refused and she hired a lawyer and the sued McDonald's for how much they make off of coffee a day which is $9,000,000.

August 9

Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geography class we started off the class singing Happy Birthday to a kid named John.  Then Mr. Schick taught us how to create a Google document.  This is probably one of the coolest document program I have ever used.  It has all of the same stuff that Microsoft Word has but you can invite people to work on it with you.  What I mean is that when one person creates the document they can choose to make it public or private and then choose people who you want to invite through their G-Mail accounts.  When everyone is on together, the program labels everyone's cursor so you can see who is doing what and what changes they are making to the document. This is awesome because everyone can get online and work together instead of meeting up and sharing a computer. This is what we did today in Human Geo.

September 6

Today in Mr. Schick’s human geography class we watched a video called, Did You Know?  It gave facts about American future and what we are up against in the world.  One of the facts in the video was the amount of honors students in India is greater than the number of kids in America. I was shocked to hear this because there is over a billion people in India and the amount of people in that land that is smaller than the USA has more honors kids then all of the kids combined in America.  Another fact was that the amount of Facebook users there are is so much that if Facebook were its own country it would be the third largest in the world! That’s how many people use social networking that was also very surprising. All over the world people are connecting with each other instantly from thousands of miles away.  But I think that the craziest fact of all is that soon China will be the number 1 country speaking English. Which is crazy because they are on a different continent on a completely different side of the world. And that isn’t even their first language! That’s what we learned today.

Spetember 4

Today in Mr. Schick’s Human Geography class we first went over the rest of the Greek terms we had for homework over the weekend.  The terms we went over today were Socrates, the death of Socrates, the Socratic Method, and what the ancient Greeks meant if they called you and idiot. First we talked about Socrates, Mr. Schick told us a story about how Socrates went to a party with good looking people and when he had a little too much to drink he started to tell all of these good looking people that he was better looking than all of these people that were clearly more attractive then him.  He was saying that he had bigger eyes because he could see more and because he had a big nose he could smell more. What he was trying to say is that he had better features then the good looking people. We did not get to go over all of the terms yet but we will get to them the next time we have class on Friday. We also spent a bit of time talking and trying to find out if it was legal to marry your horse in Texas, that is probably why we only got to talk about one of the Greek terms that we had for homework.

September 3,2013

Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geography class went over our homework that we had last night. Our homework was to identify a few Greek terms. We went over the words agora, arete, polis, the year of 508 BC, and Socrates. The terms we did not get a chance to go over in class were, the death of Socrates, the Socratic Method, and what the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot. I know that we will go over these in class tomorrow tough. Mr. Schick had us tell the class what definition we got, and he would say if that was right or if it could be something different, then he explained what the term meant and even acted out some of the words to give us a better understanding of the words. Also, Mr. Schick even informed us that everyone in our class was passing, except one person!!
